Kimmy Gibbler vanished from Hollywood for 17 years. Almost nobody knows she left to earn a master’s degree abroad

Everybody remembers the neighbor.

For eight seasons on “Full House,” Kimmy Gibbler was the girl who let herself in without knocking, the one the Tanners pretended to be annoyed by and secretly adored. Loud, goofy, always underfoot. Andrea Barber played her from 1987 to 1995, from the time she was ten years old until she was nearly nineteen.

And then, right as the show ended, she did something almost no child star ever does. She left.

Not a scandal. Not a flameout. She simply walked away from Hollywood and went to get an education.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Whittier College in 1999. Then she went further. All the way across the Atlantic, to England, where she earned a master’s degree in Women’s Studies from the University of York.

For years she wasn’t “Kimmy Gibbler” to the people around her at all. She was a staff member at Whittier College, working as assistant director of its Office of International Programs, helping young people figure out how to go study abroad the way she once had. Two kids came along. A quiet life, a real one, mostly out of view.

The break lasted seventeen years. From the mid-nineties until around 2012, she was essentially gone from acting altogether.

Then Netflix called. “Fuller House” brought the old gang back in 2016, and there she was again, letting herself in without knocking, right where she’d left off, as if no time had passed at all. The show ran until 2020.

And this summer, on July 3, 2026, the Tanners’ old neighbor did something that makes a lot of people who grew up in the eighties feel very old indeed. Andrea Barber turned 50.

Fifty. Kimmy Gibbler. The kid at the door.

She has written openly about the anxiety she carried quietly through much of it, and about how much steadier her life feels now that she stopped hiding it. The girl everyone remembers as pure chaos turned out to be one of the most grounded, self-aware people to come out of that whole world.

Not bad for the neighbor nobody was supposed to take seriously.

There's a song you've heard a thousand times that a man wrote because he couldn't get over her. Her name is right there in the title, and at 87 she just announced goodbye.
