Here’s one that reorders history in your head: the fax machine was patented 33 years before the telephone. Long before anyone could send a voice down a wire, someone had already patented a way to send a picture down one.

The someone was Alexander Bain, a Scottish clockmaker with almost no formal schooling. On May 27, 1843, he was granted a British patent for a device he called a “copying telegraph.” On paper it looks impossibly ahead of its time: a machine that could scan a message and reproduce it, mark for mark, at the other end of a wire.

The trick was clockwork and rhythm. Bain set up two pendulums, one at the sending end and one at the receiving end, and synchronized them so they swung in step. As a pendulum swept across a message written in raised metal type, a stylus brushed the surface line by line, closing and breaking an electrical circuit. At the far end, a matching pendulum moved in the same rhythm and marked chemically treated paper wherever the current pulsed through. Scan a line, send a line, print a line, then drop down and do it again. That is exactly how a modern fax thinks, worked out in gears in the 1840s.

Now hold that date against the one everybody knows. Alexander Graham Bell didn’t patent the telephone until March 7, 1876. Count it out and the gap is about 32 years and nine months. Call it 33 years, more than three decades, in which the concept of the fax existed and the concept of the telephone did not. The office gadget we all wrote off as a 1980s relic, the one with the screeching handshake and the paper that curled and faded on the windowsill, is on paper the older invention by a comfortable margin.

It gets stranger. Bain filed his copying telegraph only a handful of years after Samuel Morse’s electric telegraph. So barely after humans figured out how to send dots and dashes down a wire, one of them had already leapt to the far bigger idea: sending an actual image. Voice, the thing that feels like the obvious first step, came dead last of the three.

So why does nobody remember Bain? Because a patent is an idea, not a product. His copying telegraph worked as a proof of concept, but it never turned into a machine ordinary people used. A fax you could genuinely put to work arrived later, in the 1860s, when the Italian inventor Giovanni Caselli built his “pantelegraph” and even ran a commercial image-transmission line between Paris and other French cities for a while. And a fax on every desk, spitting out curled thermal paper in offices around the world, didn’t truly arrive until the 1980s, close to 150 years after Bain sketched the principle.

That is the part worth sitting with. We line inventions up in the order we happened to meet them in our own lives. Telephone first, then, ages later, the fax. But the calendar tells a different story, and it’s a reminder that progress isn’t a tidy relay race where each runner waits politely for the last. Ideas show up early, get filed away, and sit in the dark for decades before the rest of the world is ready to build them. Bain had the fax in 1843. The world just wasn’t done with the wire yet.

The next time a document slides out of a machine somewhere, remember that its great-great-grandfather was a set of clockwork pendulums, patented by a Scottish clockmaker a full generation before anyone said “hello” into a telephone.
