This week she marked her eighty-first birthday. And instead of easing into a quiet retirement, she has spent this stretch of her life on some of the most-watched screens in the world.
There she is in “The Thursday Murder Club,” Netflix’s cozy whodunit, playing Elizabeth Best, a sharp-eyed retiree with a spy’s past who helps a band of pensioners crack a real murder. There she is again in the crime saga “MobLand,” and in the sweeping Western “1923.” For a woman who could coast on a lifetime of awards, she works like someone with everything still to prove.
But ask around, and it isn’t the roles people are most curious about. It’s the marriage.
Because here is the thing about Helen Mirren. For most of her life, she swore she would never do it. Never marry. She said so, plainly, for years, and she meant it.
Then she met a man on a film set.
It was the mid-1980s, on the production of “White Nights.” He was the director, an American named Taylor Hackford. She was already a formidable star. Neither of them was looking for forever.
They have been together, in one form or another, ever since, something close to four decades now. For the first long stretch, marriage stayed firmly off the table. She simply didn’t believe in it, not for herself.
It took more than ten years before she changed her mind. The two of them finally wed in 1997, in a quiet ceremony in Scotland. She was in no hurry, and she has never once pretended otherwise.
