For fifty years three words followed Eve Plumb everywhere: “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!” At 68, she finally answered them herself

“Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!”

Three words. One jealous little sister rolling her eyes at the prettier one. Eve Plumb said that line on television more than fifty years ago, and she has been hearing it back ever since.

She was eleven when she first put on Jan Brady’s braids. “The Brady Bunch” ran on ABC from 1969 to 1974, and for six seasons she was the middle girl, the one stuck between gorgeous Marcia and cute little Cindy. The one nobody’s mother worried about. The overlooked one.

That was the joke of the character, and it turned out to be the trap of the career. Jan was the sister who felt invisible next to Marcia. And for decades, in a strange way, Eve Plumb the actress lived a version of the same thing. The whole world had decided who she was at age eleven, and it was not interested in updates.

Fans stopped her in grocery stores. They said the line to her at gas stations, at airports, at her own art shows. “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!” Fifty years of it. Frozen forever as a teenager in bell-bottoms in everyone’s memory but her own.

Here is the part almost nobody knows. While the country kept picturing her at eleven, Eve Plumb was quietly building a life that had nothing to do with any of it.

She became a painter. A real one, not a hobbyist. For more than twenty years she has worked in oils, still lifes mostly, a warm unfussy style she calls “casual realism,” and her work hangs in galleries with her own name on it instead of her character’s.

In 1995 she married a man named Ken Pace. More than thirty years now. Together they built a couple of small businesses far from any soundstage: a home-and-decor line called PlumbGoods, and, because they love the stuff, a little company called Happiness Included Coffee.

And then, in the spring of 2026, at 68 years old, she finally did the thing she had put off for most of her adult life. She sat down and told the whole story herself. Her memoir, “Happiness Included: Jan Brady and Beyond,” came out through Kensington Books on April 28, 2026.

For years other people had written about her, guessed about her, boiled her down to a punchline. She was done letting them.

“If I’m going to share my stories,” she said, “it’s going to be in my book.”

There is something quietly satisfying about that. The middle sister, the overlooked one, the girl everybody thought they had figured out, waited until she was good and ready, and then picked up the pen herself.

Marcia never did get the last word. Jan did.
