Kelly LeBrock had Hollywood at her feet. At 66 she runs a ranch alone and makes her own cheese
For a few years in the middle of the 1980s, Kelly LeBrock was the woman every camera in the room turned toward. She floated down a Chicago street in a red dress in “The Woman in Red” in 1984, opposite Gene Wilder, and the country decided on the spot that it had a new bombshell. A year later John Hughes cast her in “Weird Science,” and two teenage boys conjured her out of a computer as their idea of the perfect woman. She was 24. Her face sold shampoo. People stopped her everywhere.
She is 66 now, and if you want to find her, you drive north to the Santa Ynez Valley in California, past a lake, to a stretch of land she has worked for more than twenty years.
There are horses out there. Cattle. Dogs underfoot and chickens somewhere in the yard.
“I gave up diamonds for dirt,” she has said, “and I have a big ranch that I have horses and cattle and dogs and chickens, and I take care of it myself.” One man comes one day a week to help. The rest of the days are hers.
The line lands like a joke at first. Then you realize she means it literally. She grows her own vegetables. She makes her own cheese and her own yogurt, and she does not pretend any of it is easy. She has called the whole business “exhausting,” which is the kind of thing you only say about work you actually do with your hands.
None of this happened by accident, and none of it happened overnight.
The turn came after her marriage to actor Steven Seagal ended, a divorce that played out in the press while she was trying to raise their three children. She had watched enough of that to know she wanted no more of it.
“Hollywood wasn’t a place where I wanted to raise my children,” she told Fox News in 2021. “My divorce was very much in the press, and I’m just not a Hollywood girl. Never have been. I never really liked the attention.”
So she bought the land back in the mid-1990s and slowly disappeared from the thing that made her famous. She has not owned a television in over two decades. She rarely goes out.
“I don’t really go out anymore,” she said. “I’m sort of a bit of a recluse, but I like it like that.”
There is no bitterness in the way she tells it. That is the surprising part. A woman who once stood at the center of everything talks about her chickens and her cheese with more warmth than most people can summon for the best year of their careers.
The girl in the red dress could have chased the spotlight for the rest of her life. Plenty do. Instead she picked a lake, a herd, a garden, and a kind of quiet that she guards on purpose.
She traded the diamonds. She got the dirt. And by the sound of it, she came out ahead.
