Denzel Washington has two Oscars, a shelf of iconic roles, and a reputation as one of the most disciplined men in Hollywood. Ask him what he’s proudest of, though, and he doesn’t reach for any of it. He reaches for a name. Pauletta.
This past June, the two of them marked 43 years of marriage. Forty-three. In an industry where a union lasting a single decade earns a headline, they’ve quietly built something that has outlasted nearly everyone they started out with.
It began on a set, the way a lot of things in his life did, but not the way you’d guess. It was 1977. Denzel was young and mostly unknown. Pauletta Pearson was an actress and singer, classically trained, poised. They met while filming a TV movie called “Wilma,” about the Olympic runner Wilma Rudolph.
He has said, more than once, that he asked her out and got turned down. It took him a while to change her mind. When they finally married, on June 25, 1983, he was still years away from the fame that would come to define him.
That order matters, and Denzel knows it. She didn’t marry the two-time Academy Award winner. She married the guy from before any of that, the one still auditioning, still hearing no. Everything that came after, from “Glory” to “Malcolm X” to “Training Day,” she watched arrive from a front-row seat while holding the home together.
They raised four children. John David, the eldest, grew into an accomplished actor in his own right. Then there’s Katia, and the twins, Malcolm and Olivia. A full house, kept steady largely by her, while he was away on location for months at a stretch.
Denzel has never pretended otherwise. “I wouldn’t have survived without Pauletta,” he has said, flatly. Not a line for an anniversary card. Something he seems to genuinely believe about his own life.
When the American Film Institute honored him with its Life Achievement Award in 2019, he stood in front of a room full of legends and boiled his marriage down to a phrase that stuck with people: “Forty years of sacrifice.” He wasn’t only counting his own. He was counting hers.
You hear a lot of famous people call their spouse their rock, and half the time it sounds like something a publicist drafted. When Denzel says it, there’s a weight to it, because the arithmetic backs him up. Four decades. Four kids. One career that swallowed the world’s attention, and one person who chose, over and over, to keep the lights on at home so he could go chase it.
He’s 71 now. She’s still the answer he gives when anyone asks what he got right.
