Stand at a window on a bright afternoon and put your hand in the light. Whatever is warming your skin came off the surface of a star 149.6 million kilometers away, eight minutes ago. That number is easy to check and famously satisfying, and it is only the last chapter of the story.

The rest of the trip took tens of thousands of years, and it happened before the light ever got out of the Sun.

Start with the eight minutes, because the arithmetic is clean. Light moves through empty space at 299,792 kilometers per second, and nothing between here and the Sun’s surface slows it down in any meaningful way. Divide 149,600,000 by 299,792 and you get 499 seconds. Four hundred and ninety-nine seconds is eight minutes and nineteen seconds. Most people round it up and say eight minutes twenty, which is close enough for any conversation you’re likely to have about it.

So that leg is simple. Straight line, no obstacles, done.

Now go inside the star, where nothing is simple.

The Sun’s core runs at over 15 million kelvin under crushing pressure, and that is where the actual power plant sits. Hydrogen nuclei fuse into helium, and the energy released comes out as gamma-ray photons, the most violent light there is.

Those photons head outward and immediately hit a wall. Not a literal wall. A wall made of everything.

Above the core lies the radiative zone, a layer of plasma so dense that a photon travels only millimeters to centimeters before running into an ion and being absorbed. The distances involved are absurd. You are talking about a particle of light getting roughly the length of a grain of rice before it is swallowed.

And here is the crucial detail: when the ion re-emits, the direction is random.

Not outward. Random. It could go sideways. It could go straight back down toward the core it just came from. There is no preferred direction and no memory of where it was headed. Then, a grain of rice later, the same thing happens again. And again. And again, for a number of times so large that writing it down does not help anyone picture it.

Physicists call this a random walk. The everyday version is trying to cross a packed concert floor while somebody spins you on the spot every single step. You will get to the far wall eventually, because on average the crowd is thinner in that direction. It will take you an obscenely long time compared with walking it in a straight line.

How long? Estimates vary a lot, because the answer depends on the density model you use and where exactly you draw the boundaries. Published figures for the crossing run from around 10,000 years to around 170,000 years. The number that ended up in popular science, and it’s a fair shorthand, is “on the order of 100,000 years.”

Hold the two legs of the journey next to each other, because the contrast is the whole point.

The radiative zone is a few hundred thousand kilometers thick. Against a total journey of 149.6 million kilometers, that is under a quarter of one percent of the distance. That quarter of a percent takes tens of thousands of years. The remaining ninety-nine and a bit percent, the enormous vacuum between the Sun and your window, takes eight minutes and nineteen seconds.

Almost the entire journey is over in the time it takes to make coffee. Almost the entire duration is spent covering a rounding error of the distance.

Which brings us to the part that nearly everybody gets wrong, including a lot of otherwise careful articles.

You have probably heard some version of this: the sunlight on your face is a 100,000-year-old photon that has finally clawed its way out of the Sun. It’s a gorgeous thought. It is also not what happens.

A photon is not a little ball that gets knocked around a pinball machine for a thousand centuries and pops out the top. Absorption is not a bounce. When an ion absorbs a photon, that photon is gone. It has ceased to exist, and its energy is now sitting in the ion. When the ion re-emits, it does not spit the same photon back out. It creates a new one.

So the gamma ray that was born in the core lived for a fraction of a nanosecond and then died, somewhere deep in the plasma, and was replaced. Then that one died and was replaced. Multiply by an incomprehensible number of handoffs.

What actually took 100,000 years to cross the radiative zone was the energy, not the particle. The energy is the thing with the long history. It got passed from one short-lived photon to one ion to the next short-lived photon, over and over, like a bucket of water going hand to hand down a line of firefighters a hundred thousand years long, where every firefighter exists only for the instant they are holding the bucket.

The photon that eventually left the Sun’s surface and traveled to your kitchen window was manufactured right there, at the photosphere. By the time it hit your skin it was about eight minutes old. Newborn.

There’s a second thing the energy loses along the way, and it’s the reason you can sit in sunlight at all. Each absorb-and-re-emit cycle happens in slightly cooler plasma than the one before, and the light that comes back out is a little softer each time. Gamma radiation in the core, gradually stepped down through the layers, and by the time it escapes the surface it has become the visible light and infrared warmth we evolved inside of. The Sun does not shine gamma rays at us. It shines what is left after a hundred thousand years of the journey wearing them down.

So both halves of the popular line turn out to be true, just not about the same thing.

The energy in the sunbeam across your desk really is ancient. It was released by fusion back when our species was still working out what to do with fire, and it spent all the millennia since stumbling through a few hundred thousand kilometers of plasma with no idea which way was out.

The light itself is eight minutes old.

Old energy, new light, delivered warm to your arm on an ordinary afternoon. Not a bad delivery time for something that spent a thousand centuries getting to the door.
