On the first of July, Danny Glover sat down across from Lester Holt on TODAY and said the sentence out loud. He has Alzheimer’s.
He’d known for a few years. The diagnosis came not long after the Academy handed him a statuette at the Governors Awards for a lifetime of work off screen, and for those years he told almost nobody outside his family. He kept taking jobs. He kept showing up on sets and at screenings and at the kind of small events where somebody’s nephew wants a photo. Nobody watching him work would have guessed.
Then, three weeks before his eightieth birthday, he decided who got to tell the story.
“I can live with it, in a sense,” he told Holt. “I’m sure as it advances, things are going to be different and changing.”
Read that twice. There’s no drama in it, no plea, no request for anything. It’s a man doing his arithmetic out loud, in public, with the cameras running, and refusing to pretend the arithmetic is different than it is.
Then he said the part that traveled.
“I don’t feel like it’s the end of my life. There’s work to do.”
He turns 80 on Wednesday, the twenty-second of July.
The kid from San Francisco who got there late
He was born in San Francisco in 1946, to parents who worked for the post office. He did not grow up in a family with a route into show business. He didn’t get discovered at nineteen. He worked, he studied, he came to acting later than most people who make a living at it, and for years he was one more actor in the Bay Area doing theater and hoping.
The eighties opened up all at once. Places in the Heart. Witness. The Color Purple. Then in 1987 a cop movie handed him a partner who wouldn’t stop talking and a line the whole country memorized, and Roger Murtaugh made him a face that every American over forty can pick out of a crowd.
What people forget is the other half of the resume. To Sleep with Anger. Beloved. Dreamgirls. The Royal Tenenbaums. Sorry to Bother You, which came out in 2018 when he was seventy-one and which introduced him to an audience that was not born when Lethal Weapon opened. He never did the thing where an actor gets famous and then coasts. He kept taking odd, difficult, unglamorous parts in small films that needed a name to get made.
Why the interview landed the way it did
Here is the part that made the segment travel further than a health headline usually does.
His daughter Mandisa was there for it, and UPI reported that she framed the decision the way a family frames a thing they have already talked about in the kitchen: this was about her father maintaining control over his own narrative.
That’s the whole story in six words.
Because there is a version of this that happens to famous people all the time, and everyone has watched it. Somebody notices something at a public appearance. A photo gets picked apart. An anonymous source close to the family says something to a website. A statement gets issued in the third person, by a publicist, two weeks after the internet has already decided. The person it’s happening to is the last one to speak, and by then nobody’s listening to him, they’re listening about him.
Glover skipped the whole sequence. He sat down, in daylight, with a reporter people trust, and he said it first. No one got to break the news about Danny Glover except Danny Glover.
And notice what he did not do. He did not announce a retirement. He did not say goodbye. He said there’s work to do, which is not a slogan, it’s a schedule.
Eighty
Reports differ on exactly which year the diagnosis came. Some outlets say 2023, some say 2022, right around the time of that award. He didn’t clear it up, and honestly it isn’t the interesting number.
The interesting number is 79 turning 80, with a man sitting in a chair on national television describing what is ahead of him without softening it and without performing courage about it. Things are going to be different and changing. He knows. He said so.
For a lot of families this is the hardest part of a diagnosis like this: not the medicine, the silence around it. The way a household starts speaking in a lowered voice about a person who is sitting right there. Glover, at 79, refused the lowered voice. He picked the room, the chair, the interviewer and the day.
His birthday falls on a Wednesday this year. There will be tributes, and clips of Murtaugh saying he’s too old for this, and somebody will cut together the montage. All of that is fine. But the thing worth keeping from this particular summer isn’t the montage.
It’s that when the biggest news of his life came due, the man told it himself, in his own words, three weeks ahead of the candles.
